Option for hosting Formula 1 Magyar Nagydíj until 2037

2021. July 31. 16:03

László Palkovics, Minister of Innovation and Technology, and Zsolt Gyulay, CEO of Hungaroring Sport Zrt., held talks on Saturday morning with Stefano Domenicali, who is in charge of F1, and he agreed Hungary to host the series until 2037.

Stefano Domenicali has been CEO of Formula 1 since January, and this is the first time he has visited Hungary in this position. The former Ferrari team boss held talks with Hungarian Grand Prix officials on Saturday morning and agreed to allow the country to host races until 2037. After the meeting, László Palkovics said that he and Domenicali had touched on three main issues:

"I assured Mr. Domenicali that the Hungarian government is committed to hosting Formula 1 in Hungary. We have a financial and financing agreement until 2032 and I suggested that we would like to extend it by five or ten years. He agreed that after 2032 we would have this option until 2037, so we would have F1 in Hungary until 2037. Of course, a lot needs to be done, this track was built in 1986, it is rustic and it is a relic of the past, it is no longer up to modern standards. The Hungaroring and the government have therefore started a development programme, and between 2022 and 2023 we will completely renew the entrance area, and between 23 and 25 we will completely renew the paddock and the grandstands.

As Hungary is an innovative country, we have also agreed to include some technologies in the future that are relevant to our country. One of them is that next year the track will have a local 5G network and various F1 functions will be installed on it. As autonomous driving is also important in Hungary, I suggested that the safety car before the first lap could be replaced by a self-driving AMG Mercedes. Obviously, we have to work this out, but the director of the Mercedes factory in Kecskemét used to be the head of AMG, so it could be done next year.

We also talked about a third issue. HUMDA, the Hungarian Motorsport Development Agency, has set up a company called HUMDA Lab. It's a research and development centre run by Gergely Bári. Its financing has been solved and the facility will be built here, on Hungaroring. We are looking for young engineers who are interested in this and are able to contribute to the technologies. I have asked Mr Domenicali to keep this project in mind."

Zsolt Gyulay, who runs the Hungaroring, also welcomes the steps taken to extend the Hungarian Grand Prix contract. He said the most important short-term project for this is a complete and comprehensive renewal of the facility:

"We are very happy with the 2037 date. There are very good things happening in the Hungarian motorsport at the moment, and one of them is the renewal of the circuit. The plans will be ready in September and then the renovation will be carried out in three phases. The first is the office building and the main entrance, with shop, café and everything that goes with it. The second phase will cover the grandstand and the 10,000 square metres of event space behind it, and the third will cover the paddock and the main building.

Construction could start in early spring, with the first phase hopefully ready for the 2022 race. It would be good to demolish the grandstands at the finish line immediately after next year's race, so that a modern grandstand with a capacity of 10,000 spectators could be in place for the 2023 race. And then the paddock building would be demolished and the entire paddock widened. Mr Domenicali is very approachable, he really likes us, he appreciates the 35 years we have left behind."
